COUNSELING STAFF

Mary J. Barnett , Middle School Counselor
Mary has been a counselor at Mt. Abraham since 1990, providing 1:1 and group counseling and support to students in grades 7-12.  Her education was at Bucknell University, where she earned an honors degree in Psychology.  She earned a Master of Education in Counseling from Northeastern University, and has since taken over 30 graduate credits in many areas of interest, including group and family counseling, mediation, and a variety of adolescent issues.

Mary brings a wide variety of work experience to her job.  She has been an Educational Supervisor at a school for children with learning disabilities, has set up and run adult literacy programs in rural communities, supervised waterfront programs at summer camps, taught English to Laotian and Vietnamese teens, served as a counselor at a college, and spent seven years as a Guidance Counselor and coach at Otter Valley before coming to Mt. Abraham.

Mary’s interests are many.  She loves singing. You may have heard her perform as a member of Womensing, or seen her in Marrowbone or Nightfires, productions that are put on annually by her theater company. She also likes enjoying the beauty of Vermont by being outside and active. She loves hard work, enjoying creating and maintaining perennial beds, working with stone, doing carpentry projects, and working in the woods.

Yvette LaPete, Registrar/Secretary
Yvette has been at Mt. Abraham for twenty-six years. She is a graduate of Champlain College. After college Yvette worked at the University of Vermont Summer and Evening Division for two years. In 1966 she worked at General Electric before moving to Maryland with her husband who was stationed at Fort Mead while serving in the Army. In Maryland she worked for NASA on the first manned missions. It was an exciting job and she met people from all over the world!  Yvette returned to Vermont when her husband was discharged from the service. She also returned to General Electric before taking maternity leave.
When Yvette decided to re-join the work force, she applied only to educational facilities since she enjoyed her work so much at the University of Vermont. It was then that she was hired at Mount Abraham.
Yvette lives in New Haven. She enjoys her family, reading, flower gardens, and many crafts such as quilting, rubber stamping and scrapbooking.
