The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Project Guidelines

Plan Due: Topic Chosen 1/31

Final Due: 2/12

Choose from among the following projects, or see me if you have your own idea.  All written projects should be at least 2 pages long.  If a project is marked with an asterisk after the description, you must do two projects.  You may also do an extra project for extra credit.

1.  Make a word search puzzle.  Include things Tom likes to do, things he collects, superstitions, people and places in the novel.  List all the items you include.  Also give an answer key. (*)

2.  List all the different superstitions mentioned in the novel and explain their significance. (*)

3.  Act out by yourself one of the major scenes in the novel.  Take on the identity of several characters through voice inflection.

4.  Draw pictures illustrating a chapter from beginning to end.  One scene for each event in the chapter. (*)

5.  Write a newspaper article and do a blow-up poster with captions and photos/diagrams for the article.  Name the newspaper.  Write the headlines for a major scene in the novel.

6.  Make a collage representing the character and actions of Tom Sawyer or another character in the novel. (*)

7.  Bring Tom Sawyer up to date.  Keep his personality, but give him the luxuries of today.  How does it affect him? (*)

8.  Write an obituary for Tom, Huck, Becky, Dr. Robinson and Injun Joe.  Be specific. (*)

9.  Draw a time line to illustrate the events in the story.

10.  Research the toys and games that were popular during Tom Sawyer's time period.  Compare them to today's toys and games.

11.  Research life on the steamboats on the Mississippi River.

12.  Keep a diary for Tom throughout the story, using first person point-of-view.

13.  Make a Hyperstudio or Powerpoint presentation (8-10 cards/slides) showing your knowledge of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

14.  Create a website about the novel & Mark Twain using Microsoft FrontPage.
